. joining me now is bob shrum, democratic strategist, and chris stal ball, co-host of "the cycle" on msnbc. bob, let ne start with you. is this as bad as it looks for romney or should i be looking at it more holistically? >> well, i think they should have said that ohio is a big hole in our planet. romney is not an ohio kind of guy. out there he comes across like a guy from another planet. in fact, there's one bain man on youtube that's had 350,000 hits in ohio. >> 350,000 hits just in the state of ohio? >> just in the state of ohio. and then he talks about getting tough on outsourcing to china but he's the one that outsourced to china. and now he says, i care about the middle class but gives no specifics. it's not believable. look, the guy did a terrible mistake by saying the 47%. the man who said he doesn't care about 47% of the people is heading for not even getting 47% of the vote. >> krystal, when you look at the polls, and not just the "new york times" poll, the president has a big lead. 10%, "new york times." "the washington post," 8% for the president. nbc washington journal, 7% le
the news to their perspective? and bob in venice, florida, says fox news is unbiased and factual? this is news of great magnitude or more likely a kool-aid-induced hallucination. they are merely an ex-stream wing of the republican party designed to increase stupidity among its viewers, with considerable success. that's bob in venice, florida. coming up in just a few minutes -- maria bartiromo from cnbc will join us to have a conversation about the economy. you'll be able to talk to her as well. and then after that, we will have the author of this book, who is a physician, a surgeon, at johns hopkins hospital in baltimore, "unaccountable" is the name of the book, what hospitals won't tell and you how transparency can revolutionize healthcare. marty makary is the author of that book, and he'll be joining us after maria bartiromo, and we will be right back. >> my opponent and his running mate are big believers in top-down economics. they basically think that if we just spend another $5 trillion on tax cuts that favor the very wealthiest, then -- don't boo. vote. vote. vote. >> we go
's bob costas. it's the disastrous call by replacement refs that game seattle a win over monday night that's fills coaches and players and thousands of football players. president obama twirted saying that nfl fans on both siesd of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon. >> did you watch that packers' game last night? give me a break. i fell leak they work part time in the president's budget office. >> let's get into this. rob, i've got to throw this rt fast. where can we get a tight shot of this, the "osei can't you se oh say can't you see" with the refs with the seeing-eye dog. this is a billion-dollar industry and it's kind of sofa change that they're not willing to pay to bring them back. >> it's basically $40 million a year in an industry that has $9 billion a year in revenue. the owners want the refs to semithe 401(k) plan instead of the pension plan. they want to be able to fire refs who mess up calls. the owners have dug in. they're used to winning things. they had a lockout with the players. they're used to winning and they're trying to win against the refrs but ove
in next week's debate. bob and senior political analyst mark halperin joining me now. bob, you've done a lot of debate prep over the years, memorable the lloyd bentsen debate. >> that was the first one i helped in, but i've done a lot more since then. >> a good one liner in that one for sure. >> the one liner is very interesting. you can bet that in these debate preps people are looking for the line and what happens with these candidates is under pressure they tend to default to what they're saying out on the campaign trail and what -- in 1988, the benson prep team knew -- >> against dan quayle. >> who became vice president, that he had a tendency to go around justifying himself by saying he had as many years in the congress as jfk did when elected president. that violates number one my primary rule in politics which is don't compare yourself to jfk or reagan, you're no, not going to come off well. it gave benson an opening. he didn't say it until the fourth time asked about his experience by tom brokaw. the first three times he had a different answer and i think he felt the fourth tim
with a lobbyist? it doesn't make sense. that's my comment. host: our next call is bob on our line for independents. good morning, bob. came yeah, i live in sacramento, california, and we have undivided government here for a long time, except for when schwarzenegger tried to come in, and the results were disastrous. of course, the unions and democrats and so forth did anything they could to get them in line. if you want to see an undivided government for a long period of time with lots of new regulations and businesses leaving, like campbell's soup is leaving, closing down here in sacramento, california. comcast is closing their call center here, just in the paper yesterday. and another one i can't think of. but you're going see what's going to happen. the tax-paying businesses will leave the state and move elsewhere, and i don't know how they're going to get by. i'm 78 years old. if i was a little younger, i'd pull out of this place, and i've been here all my life. in fact, i was in business here for a while. host: hey, bob -- caller: i do not want to see the undivided government with the liberals

points in the latest polls. what's going on in the senate race where senator bob casey is only up by six points? >> well, i don't -- i can't answer that at all, andrea. i think bob casey will win in double digits. there's no question about that. he's always been very, very popular. in fact, he's only lost one statewide election ever. and you remember who that was to. he's tough to beat. mr. smith is a very nice man and, you know, he comes across as very earnest, but i don't think bob casey is in a bit of trouble. >> if he's in a bit of trouble then the senate is definitely in trouble for democrats. >> no. >> before you go, both of you, please weigh in on the nfl. ed, i know you're a huge football fan. vin webber, the vikings. >> look, for a minnesota vikings fan, there is nothing to complain about after we beat the 49ers last sunday, so i'm going to have to leave all the complaints to governor rendell because we're happy in minnesota. >> you've got a free one, didn't you? >> i'm happy to say that all of a sudden everyone, governor romney, paul ryan, we're all pro union all of a sudden. >

was on the other side of that equation while debating another 73 year old. this one was former senator bob dole. clinton handled the issue this way. >> i don't think senator bill is too old to be president. it's the age of his ideas that i question. >> so we'll have to wait and see if there is a memorable moment tonight that can shape the final month of the race. sometimes it is a one liner. sometimes it is a facial expression. >>> white house soup of the day. that is good soup. i wish i were eating it today. coconut shrimp. you are watching "the daily rundown" on msnbc. and virginia governor bob mcdonald are going to iowa, and chris christie and scott walker are in new hampshire, but they're not there to campaign for mitt romney, are they? >> no, they're not. they're there preparing for 2016, which is probably the republican party's best bet at this point. but this is really interesting. i think that the folk on the right who are scared about this are actually right, that pollsters are actually interacting with people who are more progressive, more centrist, and less identifying with what we think of now as the republican party. that's just a state of reality. the republican party is shrinking, so by definition, that means that pollsters are going to encounter folk who don't necessarily agree with the radical ways the party is constructed. we've been chuckling all day about this sam jackson ad, but the ad reflects the fact that people are waking up to the reality that mitt romney simply isn't a really credible or very, very competent politician. and all these gaffes and all these mistakes continue to reinscribe that fact. >> to both of you, we have an interes
